Mississippi State Fires Head Football Coach Zach Arnett

After Just One Season

Arnett Led Bulldogs to 4-6 Record in 2023

Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season, the university announced Monday. Arnett, who had been the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator for three seasons, took over as head coach in December 2022 following the tragic passing of Mike Leach. Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon announced the move in a statement.

"After careful consideration, I have made the decision to relieve Zach Arnett of his duties as head football coach," Selmon said. "This was a difficult decision, but it is one that I believe is in the best interests of our football program. I want to thank Zach for his dedication to Mississippi State and wish him all the best in the future."

Arnett led the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record in 2023, including a 1-6 mark in SEC play. Mississippi State finished the season tied for last in the SEC West.

"I am disappointed that my time as head coach at Mississippi State has come to an end," Arnett said in a statement. "I want to thank the players, coaches, and staff for their hard work and dedication. I also want to thank the fans for their support. Mississippi State will always hold a special place in my heart, and I wish the program all the best in the future."

Mississippi State will now begin a search for its next head football coach. The Bulldogs have been linked to several potential candidates, including former Baylor coach Matt Rhule and former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze.
